It is blueberry season around here, and the picking is good! We visited our favourite blueberry orchard yesterday and picked our little hearts out with some friends, and the harris hawk who was on duty protecting the berries from the birds. Always a treat to see the hawk and meet his trainer.
We walked away with 12.5lbs of the delicious blue berries. Some of the berries have already made it to the freezer, and blueberry jam is in the plans for today, Whatever is left we will enjoy as is, by the handful.
The best thing about blueberries, the long picking season. We will be heading back next week for another session of picking, and then, a little more jam making.

They look delicious, and how great to meet the hawk too. Blueberry picking is something we don't really have over here unfortunately. I keep meaning to try and get a couple of bushes for the garden, we have the right kind of soil I think, but my garden always gets neglected!ReplyDelete
Not only do they look delicious, they are delicious :) The hawk is awesome, this is the second year we have gotten up close and personal with him.Delete
You lucky duck! My favorite is blueberries with milk and sugar. Some in the hand some for the freezer :)ReplyDelete
It's huckleberry season in Montana- I'm to chicken to go pick them in the mountains ...because the grizzlies love them too.
I think I would be chicken too!Delete
We are down to just our freezer stash. I was just thinking I need to try and get out again, before blueberry season is completely over!ReplyDelete
You certainly do!Delete
I bet your kitchen smells pretty good right now! For a second I thought that was a wild hawk, but then I read trainer and thought phew, they are safe :)ReplyDelete
It does! Twelve jars of jam made today, that takes our total jam count up to 30 jars! I am thinking with another couple of batches of blueberry jam next week, we just might make it through the winter. Yay!!!!Delete
EEE I'm so excited for you. I can't wait to go bluberry picking next week when we are in maine. I only wish I could pick them with you. Too bad Maine is still so far from you.ReplyDelete
Squeal! I am so happy your berries are now ripe, you know how I love them I hope your season is a great as ours was, it was epic!ReplyDelete
I am pretty happy too Tracey. This has been one amazing year for berries all around...those grown on farms and those growing in the wild. We are so enjoying it. And just think, in the next few weeks wild blackberries and thimbleberries will be ready...can't wait!Delete
What delightful photos!!! And what fun for all of you. I'm not sure we have anywhere local to pick blueberries, but it sure does look like fun!!ReplyDelete
Thanks Summer! It is a ton of fun, especially with good friends to share it with.Delete
Love the dew covered berries! So glad that ya'll made it to the fields! The picking sure was easy this year and I am so glad that our freezer is full of berries again! Such a lovely treat to have a little reminder of summer during the winter! xoReplyDelete
Thanks Shel! It has been a great year for berries, and still blackberries to come.Delete
Oh my! I love blueberries. I ended up with a 20lb box, a gift from my husband. He knows me well. It will make for a welcome treat from the freezer this winter. Loving all the garden posts. I forgot how sweet summer truly is with the bounty from nature.ReplyDelete
Oh, how wonderful! I love our freezer berries, like you said a special treat during that long dark days of winter.Delete
Thank you. xo
Looks like the perfect day!! I'm not a big fan of blueberries but the rest of my family loves them. That hawk is just gorgeous!! Have a wonderful weekend, Kim!! : )ReplyDelete
It was pretty perfect! You don't like blueberries, really?Delete
Wishing you a lovely weekend too.
Oh that looks like so much fun - they don't grow blueberries at PYO around here - my girls love them and they'd think it was the most exciting thing ever!ReplyDelete
Well that is too bad, I think there should be a blueberry PYO everywhere :) It really is fun to pick them, and so easy, as there are so many on each branch.Delete
