Blueberries

It is blueberry season around here, and the picking is good! We visited our favourite blueberry orchard yesterday and picked our little hearts out with some friends, and the harris hawk who was on duty protecting the berries from the birds. Always a treat to see the hawk and meet his trainer.

We walked away with 12.5lbs of the delicious blue berries. Some of the berries have already made it to the freezer, and blueberry jam is in the plans for today,  Whatever is left we will enjoy as is, by the handful.

The best thing about blueberries, the long picking season. We will be heading back next week for another session of picking, and then, a little more jam making.

  1. They look delicious, and how great to meet the hawk too. Blueberry picking is something we don't really have over here unfortunately. I keep meaning to try and get a couple of bushes for the garden, we have the right kind of soil I think, but my garden always gets neglected!

It's huckleberry season in Montana- I'm to chicken to go pick them in the mountains ...because the grizzlies love them too.

    1. It does! Twelve jars of jam made today, that takes our total jam count up to 30 jars! I am thinking with another couple of batches of blueberry jam next week, we just might make it through the winter. Yay!!!!

    1. I am pretty happy too Tracey. This has been one amazing year for berries all around...those grown on farms and those growing in the wild. We are so enjoying it. And just think, in the next few weeks wild blackberries and thimbleberries will be ready...can't wait!

  9. Oh my! I love blueberries. I ended up with a 20lb box, a gift from my husband. He knows me well. It will make for a welcome treat from the freezer this winter. Loving all the garden posts. I forgot how sweet summer truly is with the bounty from nature.

    1. Well that is too bad, I think there should be a blueberry PYO everywhere :) It really is fun to pick them, and so easy, as there are so many on each branch.
