Play
Last year, for the first time, I chose a guiding word for the year. It was a bit of a daunting exercise, I mean, just one word for the entire year, but it worked out well, and gave a lovely focus to my year. So this year I am doing it again.
My guiding word for 2014 is PLAY.
I want to play this year, in a big way. Play with words in my journal. Play with my camera. Play with my creative soul. Play in nature. Play with Reece. Play in the garden. Play in the kitchen, both cooking and creating new self care products. I want to play and have a ton of fun doing it.
Even just thinking about it makes me smile, a whole year to play. I can't think of a better way to spend 2014.
How about you? Have you chosen a guiding word for the year ahead? Care to share?

I love your take on play - so nurturing! Xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Elisa. Nurturing was on my list too, but when play came into my mind it just felt so good and kinda did the job of both words :)
DeleteWe choose a word for each year too! Play is such a great idea (I'll have to suggest that one next year)! Last year we chose "kindness" the year before "joy" this year we chose "harmony". And the funny thing is that each year we choose a word not necessarily of something we need to work on (as some families choose words for) but as something that we want to focus on and spread lots of!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, dear friend! My hope is that 2014 is the year we can meet in person! xo
That is lovely Shel, and your word is perfect. Funny you should say that, I am hoping the same thing...let's make it happen. xo
DeleteThat sounds like a lovely Word! Mine is Deeper. I'm super excited for it : )
ReplyDeleteThank you, and Deeper, great word!
DeleteI love the word play as your guiding word for 2014! So many bloggers seem focused on self improvement with their words but I love the notion of focusing on the playful. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThank you Josie, so looking forward to all the play to come :)
Deleteoh! I like your word so much better than mine!! With the idea of trying to be more 'in the moment'---I chose mindfulness. (I'm much better at play than mindfulness!!!) Have a lovely, playful new year, Kim!
ReplyDeleteMindfulness is a great word! Living in the moment is something you won't regret. Happy New Year!
DeleteWhat a great idea! Hmmm...for me the first that comes to mind is Art. But as a family, Growth. Oh so many wonderful words makes it hard to choose! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Art is a good one for you. And growth for the family, really good one. It is hard to choose, but nice to have something to guide us through the year.
DeleteThat is a great word, Kim!
ReplyDeleteI picked "receive" for 2014. I think it is the perfect word for this year of great change.
Thanks Dawn. Yours is great too, and you are right perfect word for the year of change ahead for you and your family.
DeleteWhat a great word! Sounds to me like you already are playing. My word last year was patience. I needed a lot of that. I have yet to decide on a word. We'll see what comes. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks KC and yes we have been playing already. Yesterday in nature and with friends, last night I played by taking some time to create and today there has been play with Reece, and a little writing. So far so good!
DeleteLooking forward to seeing what you come up with.
I love it. I am way too scatter brained to pick just one word, but if I had to focus on one, it would probably be calm.
ReplyDeletehave fun playing!
That is a good one Taryn :)
DeletePLAY! One of my most favorite words! What a wonderful word to usher in the New Year! Wishing you lots of play in every aspect of your life! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Summer!
DeleteWhat a merry choice! Can't wait to see how it "plays" out. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks Meryl :)
DeleteI think my word would be calm. I do not always have a tendency towards calmness........am working on that! I do like your choice of play though. I like Steph's choice of mindfulness, which may be a better choice for me....hmmm, will have to think on that...
ReplyDeleteThere are so many good ones out there, eh? It is hard to pick just one, but you know once I pick one, I find it really does fit me well.
DeleteOh, wow...it really is hard to choose one word. I love your choice of "play", and I also like Steph's choice of "mindfulness". My very first word as a child was "happy". I think my choice will be "happy" to remind myself to feel the joy and happiness that I did as a little girl...even when the tough get going. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your photo, btw, so peaceful!
It is! Happy is good, looking forward to following along on your journey of happiness this year :)
DeleteWhat a fun way to live the year! I'm still thinking on my word, but I love this. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love it Kim!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy word for 2014 is "CREATE" !
* Creating a happy and healthy life for myself and my family.
* Creating time to have fun together as a family.
* Creating a beautiful home environment.
* Creating time for yoga, exercise, meditation, creating healthy food.
And my motto is:
Progress not perfection.
Enjoy your play time! It sounds fun!!!! xxoo
Awesome Julie, perfect word for you. Can't wait to follow along :)
DeleteI like your word, it sounds so doable and fun! I haven't picked a word but if I did I think your word is whimsical :)
ReplyDeleteAwe, thanks!
DeleteI love your word....sounds so wonderful.
ReplyDeleteFUN.
I definitely need more fun in my life- and this is the year for it!
Who doesn't need more fun in their life :)
DeleteWhat a perfect word, Kim! I'm tossing around "pace" or maybe "balance" :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Those are good ones, can't wait to see which one you pick :)
DeleteThat sounds like a wonderful way to spend the year!
ReplyDeleteI am still meditating on my word; I think I have it, but as you say, it's one word for the whole year, so I want to be sure it fits. ("Prompt" is *not* it...) xo
Thanks, I think so too and if the first days of 2014 are any indication it is going to be a great year.
DeleteLooking forward to hearing your word once you have found it.
Love it!! I can use a little more play in my year too. =)
ReplyDeleteI think we all can :)
DeleteI like how you explain "play." To me it seems very freeing. Especially about the camera. I think too many of us think we need to "learn" our camera when instead we should be "playing" with our camera.
ReplyDeleteThank you! And yes I agree with you, playing is where it is at :)
