Message Received

This summer has been the summer of the great blue heron for me. For the last four weeks or so, they have been crossing my path, sharing their exquisite beauty with me, on a regular basis. You may think it strange when I tell you this, but when an animal makes an appearance in my life, as the great blue heron has been, I start to wonder about the message it is trying to send me.

In many native traditions, animals coming to you in your dreams, or in real life, have messages for us, and it is up to us to take the time to notice, and find the message. And so, after my very close encounter on Monday, I could no longer ignore it, I had to spend some time searching for the message. Lucky for me, it was not hard to find.

"According to North American Native tradition, the Blue Heron brings messages of self-determination and self-reliance. They represent an ability to progress and evolve. The long thin legs of the heron reflect that an individual doesn't need great massive pillars to remain stable, but must be able to stand on one's own.
Blue Herons have the innate wisdom of being able to manoeuvre through life and co-create their own circumstances. Blue Herons reflect a need for those with this totem to follow their on unique wisdom and path of self-determination. These individuals know what is best for themselves and need to follow their hearts rather than the promptings of others. Those with the Medicine of the Great Blue Heron may sit until the rest of us lose patience. And, when they follow the promptings of the heart, they are one of the most magnificent when they choose to soar." (T.Andrews, Animal Speak)
After letting this sink in for a few days, I believe my message from the great blue heron this summer is to stay on my own unique path. He is sharing a message with me to continue to let my heart guide me, and to pursue the dreams I hold close. I also think he is telling me to keep deepening my connection with nature, and to ground myself in the earth, and my beliefs.
On Wednesday, as I drove by a pond where I have seen a great blue heron each and every time I am in the area the last few weeks, there was no great blue heron. I drove home thinking about this, and it struck me. I have received his message, the great blue heron has shared his wisdom with me, and I have chosen to see it. His work is done, and he has moved on.

  5. I LOVE this. You know I have a heron that frequents the duck pond and now he has been absent the last week or so. I am going to ponder what you wrote. I said goodbye to two adult children as they moved to new towns and I am trying to let go in the process (as in not worry). Hmmm. I really like the significance of seeing that bird.

    1. Thanks Karen. Interesting. I wonder if he is letting you know that your children will be okay. That they are now on their own paths, moving forward, and that all will be okay, and there is no need to worry (although as a mother I don't think the worry ever goes away).

    1. There is so much we could learn from nature, if only we would tune in more often.

  9. well, I didn't know that about blue heron's and will have to share with my guys. We have blue heron's here and in fact I have a large print of one hanging in a bathroom.
I can not imagine go though this life without a deep connection to nature, it would be only half living don't you think?
    Enjoy a beautiful weekend Kim.

    1. I didn't either Tracey. And I don't usually see that many. We do have them, but they just don't cross my path that often, that is why I was curious as to why they were around so much.

I totally agree with you Tracey. I would be lost without nature, and my connection to it.

Wishing the same for you. xo

  11. What wonderful wisdom... Making me rethink all those times I've seen Blue Herons here as well. They have been everywhere : Over our car on country roads, in ponds while we hike and even by the sides of the highway, just watching the cards fly by.

    Thank you for sharing! xo

    1. Thanks, happy to share. I always wonder about animals when they appear in my life. Two years ago, for a few weeks, owls kept appearing on my path, and last year, red tailed hawks. It was pretty amazing, and both messages definitely gave me something to think about.
