Quiet

A sick little man, really his first illness other than the odd fever or runny nose. His little eyes looking up at me questioning just what was happening to his body. His little arms reaching up to be held. His little body sinking into mine as we snuggled on the couch.

Is it wrong that I enjoyed this time? I mean, I was not happy that he was sick, not at all, but I was happy and quite enjoyed the quiet time it allowed us. Time to do nothing, to just sit and be, with each other.

The two of us snuggled together on the couch all day long reading books, talking and sleeping. Well him sleeping, me reading and knitting. I enjoyed this time. I enjoyed him sitting, tucked up under my arm sleeping soundly. I listened, in the quiet of our home, to his breathing, feeling the rise and fall of his body with each breath. I checked his hands often, his hands are always super hot when he has a fever, running my fingers over the top of his hand and then holding his little hand gently in mine. I ran my fingers through his hair, stared at his long, beautiful eyelashes, and kissed his cheeks.

There was nothing else in my day, just him. Wishing him well, giving his body the time it needed to heal and soaking up every little bit of our time on the couch.

He is feeling a little better now, he was down and out for just the day, although he is still not eating much, but that will come, and if I look deep into his eyes, there is still a little shadow, not quite the light I am use to. Another day or two and I am sure he will be running around like the crazy little man he keeps telling me he is.

  1. There certainly is something about a sick little one… like a glimpse back to the baby days when the need for that physical nurturing/connection is so strong. Plus, you actually get a minute of stillness to stare at their long eyelashes:-) I hope he feels better soon!

    1. Yes, so true. It was how I felt actually, like those early days just sitting there with him in my arms staring at him :)

Thank you, he is feeling much better today.

  2. I will admit there is a part of me that looks for that closeness when my oldest is sick. She is at an age of "NO - I can do it myself!" which means that even hugs before preschool are sometimes too much of an imposition for her. She's just TOO BUSY don't you know????

I'm glad he's feeling better. Hopefully his appetite will be back soon. Took 5 days for my daughter to really start eating again, but now, she just won't stop. LOL!

    1. Haha, that is usually what happens with them, a little growth spurt after an illness, and lots of food :)

  4. I hope he feels better soon. When the kids are sick there is a different rhythm to the day but the worrying makes it impossible to enjoy for more than a moment.

    1. Thanks Karen, he is feeling better today. I am not much of a worrier that way, so I can enjoy the stillness that it brings :)

  6. I am so sorry to hear Reece is feeling so crummy! I totally know what you mean about enjoying the snuggle time together though (and this coming from one mama who, along with her littles, lives very slowly to anther mama who lives the same way)! Please let Reece know that we are sending lots of healing thoughts his way! Be well, dear friend! xo

    1. It is! He is full of energy today, although right now a little tired after a busy day with a friend here. Fingers are crossed that I stay healthy, I have been eating a ton of raw garlic and have increased the vitamin D and C, zinc and probiotics. xo

  10. I understand what you say about enjoying the time. I certainly don't like when my kids are sick...but it really forces me to stop and spend time snuggling them (letting everything else wait). Those moments can be so special. Glad he is feeling better!

  11. I think nursing and comforting someone who is unwell is one of the ultimate acts of love and kindness. Lots of emotions involved with those activities. Is it any wonder you enjoy the opportunity to shower your little man with some extra love. :) Good to hear you're upping the intake of vitamins, mothers normally fall next ! Stay well Kim xx

    1. Oh yes. And nurse we did, I am happy I still have that tool under my belt for when he is sick. I am sure it is one of the reasons he has never really been sick before...mama's milk is pretty darn amazing! Thanks Chrisy, I am trying. xo

  13. Though i never look forward to any sickness I do love to hold them tight when they are sick. I love that at that time I can smell their baby smell coming right out of their pores and they don't move at all. You can kiss them and hug them and they won't run away or squirm. I hope he feels much better now as I am commenting a day later!

    1. It is such a special time, that is for sure. He was feeling better, but has since relapsed. Poor little guy just keeps asking when he will feel better. It is so tough for him, this being the first time he is sick.
