In Their Home

We brought our chickens home about a month ago and life has never been the same. These little creatures continue to amaze and delight us, and we love having them around. For their first month here they lived in a Rubbermaid box inside a dog crate in the little cottage in our backyard. It was the perfect set up for them and us while we worked on getting the run and coop ready.

A week ago we moved them into their new home and they love it! They wander around, they peck away at the ground, they love it when we come and visit and at night the cuddle up in their coop.

We are very proud of this little chicken run and coop. Our goal was to use as much recycled materials as possible and we met that goal perfectly. The only materials we had to purchase were chicken wire, some screws, hinges and latches, everything else you see is reused material.

We still have to make up some nesting boxes for the coop and we plan to section off a portion of the run and seed it so they have some delicious greens to compliment their diet. But for now, they are happy and so are we.

  2. That coop looks amazing. I've noticed that all the projects you've done around your house have the same wood style. Are you taking wood from your surrounding forests?

I like that the chickens are at the awkward teenager phase!

    1. Thanks KC. Justin collects a lot of wood from the forests around here. Some of it from the forest floor and the rest are dead trees. He uses it artistically for his art work and we use it for a lot of projects around the house...saves a ton of money. And we really love the look of it.

  7. Your chicken coop is wonderful! I have a huge soft spot for my girls, the roosters?...not so much as they are usually pretty cranky!

    1. Thanks Tracey. We are not sure yet if we have a rooster, we think there might be one. I would be okay with one, if there are more than one...not quite sure about that.

  8. I really, really like it! you guys did a great job! The chick he's holding looks so much like one of ours (Luna). What breed is it? We have a mix but Luna is a Blue Orpington

    1. Thanks Brooke. I am not sure what breed that one is. The farmer we got the eggs from says she thinks this one is a mix of two chickens, but I can't remember exactly what ones. I am hoping she is going to come and visit soon and let us know what they all are.

  11. Wow, that is some fancy chicken coop! Do you have wild animals in your area? The yard they run in is covered too. And I like your bunting touches!

    1. Yes we do, coyotes, foxes, racoons, hawks, vultures, etc so we made sure it was predator proof. So far so good :)

    1. Thanks Gretchen. We are now trying to figure out if there is room for more chickens in the coop, or if we have to build another one for our new chicks...decisions :)
