A Secret Garden

While Reece was busy last week helping his dad put up a bird feeder, I was busy preparing a little secret garden for Reece. Last year when we created his natural playspace I knew I wanted him to have a little secret garden where he could go, hide out and chill. I thought last year he might be a little young for the whole concept, so I decided to tuck it away in my head until this year. I kept it simple for now, a little paved area with some rocks, a log, a flower box (which he will plant next month) and a windchime hanging in the trees.  Anything else that gets added will be because Reece wants it in his special place.

As soon as the trees grow in it will be a very secret garden.

Just as I finished the secret garden he came running back to see what I was doing, appartantly me carrying rocks back there got his attention. He was so happy when he saw it  and immediately went in, sat down and looked around with a huge grin on his face. Yes, it was a definite melt your heart moment.

Since that moment he has invited his dad in to play, and added another log for visitors to sit on. He is enjoying his secret garden which makes this mama really happy.

  2. Every child should have a secret garden. When my were little there was a grove of trees that they played in for hours! They loved it.

  3. awesome idea, love it! i've been wanting to do a pole bean tee-pee for years now but have never had the sunny space to make it happen.... kind of reminds me of your idea, a cool space to hide out among nature :)

    1. Excatly!! I actually created it on the loose premise of a Sit Spot from the Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature. One of the core routines in the guide is to find a sit spot that you can go to everyday, somewhere in nature that allows you to be still and connect with nature. Hoping Reece enjoys his spot as much as I enjoy mine.

  4. What a great idea and such a very special spot for him. Have a place to just be in nature is so wonderful! I think I need my own secret garden!

  5. There's something so special about your own secret place outdoors as a child. I always had one wherever we lived. Audrey has one tucked away in our backyard under the butterfly bush. And one out front under the bushes out there. She calls them her 'houses' and spends quite a bit of time there. So sweet of you to set one up for him with a wind chime and everything. I might have to borrow the wind chime idea. My kids both love wind chimes so much.

  6. That is so great! We had a tree that had really low branches and we'd hide out there. It's always cool to have that "place." Tracey is right, you are rocking the mom title!

  9. Kim, that's such a beautiful idea! I'm really glad he loves so much! I really look forward to seeing it all covered in leaves. I used to make those myself but in the sage bush. A very different experience.

  10. Oh this is just great. I was thinking of trying to clear out a space in the forest for my little guys. I just have to mindful of bears!

This looks like such a magical place. He is such a lucky boy.

    1. Thanks Jennifer! Oh yes, being mindful of bears is very important :) This little space is actually within the fenced in area of our property so Reece is safe...unless he decides to jump the fence...
