Alphabet Rocks

I love reading other people’s blogs, really, really, love it! Most of the blogs I read tend to be moms who are on a somewhat similar journey with their families that I am on with mine. It is very much like a little community, but it is stretched out across countries instead of neighbourhoods.  It feels good to connect with them, even if that connection is just me reading about them and their journey.  The other really great part about these blogs is; I get ideas, lots and lots of ideas. Craft ideas, knitting ideas, reading ideas, family fun ideas...you get the picture. They happily share their ideas and I, as well as their other readers, get to try them out, if we wish.

Last week Shel, from One Sweet World, showed us this on her This Moment post. How awesome!! I love the idea and got set over the weekend to make some for Reece.

I hit the dollar store to pick up some rocks. I did try to use some of the billion rocks we have in our home right now, but Reece would have no part of it. Each and every one had a purpose and I was not to touch them. I had some coloured letters left from my scrap booking days and I picked up some black and white ones as well.

I was set.

Or at least I thought so. I tried sticking the letters on the rocks, but no go, they didn’t stick.

Apparently the rocks have some kind of finish on them. So, into the sink they went. I gave them a good wash and then got busy sticking the letters on the rocks.

They turned out great!

Here’s the first word I spelled:

And here’s Reece enjoying the letters the next morning:

What I love about these is the fact that they combine a little bit of nature with the letters. Yes, I can easily write the letters on a piece of paper, cut them out and give them to Reece, but these are so much more.

They are simple, they are natural and they are fun.

  1. This is an awesome idea! Tactile and brilliant. How many of each letter did you do? More of some? Like scabble? hahah.

  4. That's fun! I might try that as soon as Viola is no longer mouthing things. Right now she's about to crawl and I'm thinking oh my all the toddler toys! They do look great by the way!

  8. This is great! I wish I would have heard about this when my kids were learning to read/spell. I'll be sure to pass the idea onto friends with little ones, though. (By the way... I REALLY love the bowl they are in!!)

Thanks about the bowl, my father in law turns bowls so we have a ton of them in our home. They are so awesome!
