Our Weekend

A weekend of sunshine and summer like temperatures meant I spent all day Saturday in the garden. There was the planting of more seeds, and the weeding and tidying of all the perennial flower beds. I helped my little man build a bean teepee for his garden, and watched as he planted pole beans, and marigold seeds. He has plans to add some tomato, and eggplant seedlings to his garden this week, and with the strawberries already planted and a few other flowers he wants to plant, his little garden plot is almost filled up.  Watching him tend and nurture his garden brings a smile to my face, and I hope it is something he will continue to do for years to come.

I made it in the house just in time to cook dinner Saturday night, nettle pizza, and yes, it was enjoyed on the back deck. The rest of the evening was dedicated to rest and reading. I am reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes...have you read it? If you haven't, you should, so good.

Sunday morning dawned with a beautiful sunrise, and the promise of a wonderful day ahead. We walked with friends, in the forest, to see the trilliums, and then enjoyed a potluck lunch back at our place. After lunch the kids played, the adults chatted, and the sun shone bright and strong. Our friends left mid afternoon, and after tidying up I had planned to plant a few more seeds, but instead my body sank into the hammock with a cool drink and my book. It was wonderful. After dinner, we lingered outside, enjoying the warm evening, and soaking up the last of the sunshine.

And today, yes, we have one more day, it's a long weekend here in Canada. We have no plans for today, a walk in the woods, a little garden work, we don't quite know. It is suppose to rain, so maybe I will curl up with my book and a cup of tea. What I do know is we have a full day ahead of us, a day to do whatever we like, and we are going to enjoy it.

How was your weekend?

  1. It's raining here too, so I might follow your lead and curl up with a book! Our weekend was full of garden work too, although it has turned grey and colder here, so no meals outside or time in the hammock! I'll check that book recommendation out for when I finish the one I am reading now...I haven't heard of it but always love to discover something new. Enjoy your extra day...however you end up using it! Have fun, Em xx

    1. Well at least your garden is getting watered, right? Mother Nature gave us a gift today, and the rain has held off, the sun is shining and I spent a good bit of time in the garden today. The rain is suppose to fall overnight, which is perfect for all those seeds I planted.

I finished the book last night Em, so good. Highly recommend it.

      Thanks Em. xo

  2. I wish it was a long weekend here in the states, I have paper work waiting on me.
Yes, I've read Me before you...have a hankie near by.
Emerson has her own little garden too, she has been saving seeds all year. I love passing on skills and knowing they will be carried on for years to come.
    Have a great, great, Monday.

    1. It was so good Tracey, I finished it last night. Hankie indeed needed :)

It is such a joy to share all of this with Reece, to pass on the things I have learned over the years, and watch it all trickle down to him.

Thanks Tracey, we had a great day, the rain held off, and the sun is shining. Have a great week!

  3. Your weekend sounds like the perfect combination of work and play. I look forward to seeing pictures of Reece's garden and yours. :-) I spent hours in the garden on Saturday myself, getting all the weeding done, some more seeds put into the soil, plants added here and there... Sunday was more rest than work and that included listening to a friend play in a band. Fun.

  4. Your life always sounds so tranquil and quiet- it's really so beautiful! I have read that book and loved it- she's such a great writer, in my opinion. Well done on the garden, your little man is so blessed to learn and love by you and your hubby!

I agree with you on Jojo Moyes, this is the fourth book of hers that I have read, and she is a wonderful writer. I finished Me Before You last night, it was so good.

    1. Totally wonderful, and even better today as Mother Nature gave us a gift, and the rain held off. It will be here overnight as we sleep, which is perfect!

Yes, Reece loves his little garden plot, this is his fourth growing season, and each year he looks forward to it, and plans for months what he is going to plant. Super cute!

  7. Happy Victoria Day!

Your week-end weather was 36 hours off of ours. Saturday was cold and gray, yesterday warmed up mid morning and today is gorgeous without a cloud in sight. I have to ask, how did you get your calendula blooming already? Mine are only a few inches high! Do you start them indoors? If so, how early before planting? I might have to do that next year for sure. :-)

    1. Thanks Yanic, same to you!

Mother Nature gave us a gift today...sunshine! It has been a beautiful day, rain coming overnight, which is perfect for all the seeds I planted today :)

Yes, mine from seed are still pretty small, about 5 inches tall, that one is from the herb farm we visited last week. I had promised myself not to buy any calendula, as I started quite a few plants from seed, but when I saw the blooms I couldn't resist, so I picked up a plant. Justin only smiled as he carried it out to the car.

I killed all my seedlings :( it's to cold to plant here still. I'm looking forward to watching your gardens grow again this year. So lovely. Shine on!

And thank you so much for the little package, it made our day! The girls already have return letters for Reece written and possible plans to come and live with you. :) I'll be writing soon. Glad the garden is going well and you guys had a good weekend. Have a great week. :)

    1. It was so good! I finished it on Sunday night, in tears. This is the fourth book of hers I have read, and like you, I have loved them all. Last Letter to Your Lover was another big time favourite of mine.

So happy the package arrived. Reece is hooked on the polymer clay now. He has so much fun with it.

Hehe, pack them up, and fly them over here :) They would be more than welcome to visit anytime.

Wishing you a lovely week too. xo

Nettle Pizza sounds intriguing! The girls recently learned about Nettle Soup so that one's on our radar too. Have you ever made it? What do Nettles taste like?

I hope you had a lovely long weekend! Was it Victoria Day by you?! xo

    1. Thanks Shel. It was a lovely weekend, and yes, it is a must read. I think you would really enjoy it, but it does bring a few tears at the end.

It is delicious. We also had nettle soup last week for dinner one night too. Nettles are on the menu most nights right now, as it is ready to eat :) Once cooked and added to soups, or pizza they really don't have much of a taste, maybe a slightly earthy taste, but not too much. The soup I make is a leek, potato and nettle soup, when finished it is the most amazing shade of green, and tastes so good.

It was Victoria Day, and it was wonderful...an unexpected day of sunshine :)
