"A photo of my little man, once a week, every week, in 2015"
Reece, we hit the woods to do a little foraging yesterday, and goodness we had so much fun! We harvested ramps, coltsfoot, and trout lilies, and found many patches of garlic mustard, which will be ready to harvest in the next few weeks. You have been joining me on foraging adventures since you were a baby. Back then you sat on the forest floor, nibbling on wild raspberries, or blackberries, watching as I identified, and harvested food from the forest. Now you run ahead, looking at plants, trying to identify them yourself. There is so much joy in finding these wonderful gifts from Mother Nature, and I am so happy to be able to share it with you.

I have learned a little about foraging from Ben Hewitt's homestead book. Also, we found fiddleheads when we lived in the NE and they were do tasty! Your day sounds wonderful, Kim!
ReplyDeleteYes, he did talked about it in his book. We love foraging, it goes hand in hand with all the time we spend in the woods.
DeleteWe are waiting for the fiddleheads to be ready, soon, I think.
I have to say foraging is something I've never tried. I can't even think about a place near where we live that would be good for foraging. It's wonderful that you and Reece get to do this together!
ReplyDeleteActually I bet there are some wonderful edibles growing right in your backyard :) Yes, a lot of the weeks we pick from our gardens are actually edible. And if you have a forest nearby, there will be wild edibles there, pretty much guarantee. Grab a wild edible field guide for your area, and get out there, you will be surprised what is out there :)
DeleteEmerson is with me today [hooray, an early {grand]mother's day gift} and we have had our traditional honeysuckle harvest. It's a beautiful day here and I hope there too.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful Tracey, I can just imagine how much you two are enjoying your day together.
DeleteI hope you enjoyed your honeysuckle harvest, and yes, a beautiful day here today. xo
What a wonderful skill he is absorbing from you! I wish I knew more about wild food to be able to forage without worry but I'm pretty much stuck at blackberries and elderflower - though they're both delicious!
ReplyDeleteHey, we started with strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, years ago. You have to start somewhere. Over the years I have used my wild edible field guides to identify and harvest food from the forest, and I have also taken part in some wild edible walks lead by experienced foragers. Those are always amazing, and I learn so much from them.
DeleteThank you Carie, I hope he grows up and continues to love foraging.
Lovely post! nothing better for children than being into nature.
ReplyDeleteLluisa xoxo
I totally agree :)
DeleteWhat a lovely thing to do together. xo
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie, it is joy to share these things with Reece. xo
DeleteWhat a lovely activity and memory to be making
ReplyDeleteThanks Aimee.
DeleteHow wonderful. I love that our portraits have echoed each other's moments. Little Miss and I left hand in hand to forage coltsfoot and dandelion leaves today. I took the time to explain to her the importance of taking only a few specimen per site, what we would do with them, the beauty of nature and how generous it is. She's very excited about the honey btw. :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope your week-end was just magical dear friend. xo
We had a very magical weekend in so many ways, thank you :)
DeleteSo happy you went foraging with your little miss. I find it to be such a wonderful way to connect with my little man, to teach him about gratitude, patience, and connection, and to just be together enjoying the wonderful gifts of the earth.
Enjoy your honey, it will keep those coughs and sore throats at bay next winter :)
love the way is hair waves and curls, growing so fast!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen, I do too!
DeleteI can imagine this is something Reece will continue to do throughout his whole life, and how wonderful that is.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope so Sally. He certainly loves it right now, and I hope that love never fades.
