Creating Storage

As many of your know we live in a small, one room schoolhouse. It was built in 1878, and is my dream home. When we found it 17 years ago I couldn't believe it. We put an offer in right away, and the rest as they say, is history.

I am assuming when they built this schoolhouse there was no thought given to storage, okay I don't have to assume that, I know that! There is no storage in this place. We have over the years created two closets which store seasonal decorations, camping gear, clothes, my craft supplies and the odds and ends you gather over the years. My biggest issue is that my craft supplies were stored in the closet in Reece's room, which means if I get the urge to create once he is in bed and I haven't gathered my supplies ahead of time, well you get the picture...I end up waking him up and my creative time is spent snuggling a little one back to sleep.

I have been trying to figure something out for quite some time and just last week I suggested to Justin that a little cupboard above my craft space would be perfect. It would allow me a little bit of storage for my stuff and it would be accessible without waking my little man. Justin loved the idea and pretty much got right to work on it.

To say I was more than pleased when I saw it would be an understatement, I love it! We had not planned to put doors on it, instead I was going to make curtains and secured them top and bottom with rods. However, once it was up we both knew it needed doors. Justin whipped those up and then we added the fabric to finish them off.

So now pretty much everything I need is either in the new cupboard above or in the one below. I still have a stash of fabric in the closet in Reece's room, there is just no way I could get it all in this space, and really that is perfectly okay with me. For the most part anything I could possibly need is handy and ready for my crafting adventures.

  1. Great ideas Kim. We have no storage in my home either which can be so bothersome at times.
I just saw a cute idea using a wooden pallet that I want to try. If it works like I hope I'll take photos to
    share.

  2. I love this idea and how handy he could create what you imagined. I think it's a perfect solution for those late night inspirations :) I only just got my studio room after decades of closet corners and I do love it.

    1. Thanks Karen, and yes very handy :) I am a pretty lucky lady, I have visions and Justin brings them to fruition. I have dreams of an entire craft room...not sure it will ever happen in our little space, but you never know.

  6. This is so lovely! I especially love the nails in the dowel. I had no idea you lived in a schoolhouse. The epitome of minimalism. May I live vicariously through you?!

    1. Thank you! I love those too. That dowel was where the curtain was suppose to attach. When we decided to add the doors, I told him to leave the dowel because I liked the look :)

Yes you may, although minimalist I am not! Although always striving to live with less.

  9. Oh my goodness - that cupboard really is something else, isn't it? It's gorgeous, and organizes your things so well!

I am purging and organizing my creative space this month. I think I'm going to keep coming back to this page as an inspiration. If you can fit your supplies in one cupboard, there's no reason I can't get everything into a whole room... xo

    1. It is pretty awesome! And yes absolutely perfect for organization. Haha, I hope the inspiration works. My secret is that I usually only buy supplies when I know what I am creating, then the supplies don't hang around too long :)

    1. Thank you! And yes, I know exactly what you mean. There has been a rule implemented here that this is my space and supplies. Reece can use them but has to ask first. It also helps that he has his own craft cabinet under his craft table :)
