Winter Bird Watching

We are avid bird watches around here, and the picture above is a usual morning, except there would be a third person with binoculars looking at the birds with Justin and Reece...me.

The binoculars are always close by, ready to be grabbed as soon as a cardinal, blue jay or some other unknown bird shows up in the backyard. The guide books are easy to grab too if we need to identify the birds hanging out at the feeder.

These days we are seeing cardinals, blue jays, black capped chickadees, dark eyed juncos, American tree sparrows, red breasted nuthatches and a few morning doves. We have also been watching a couple of red squirrels as they munch away at the peanuts we leave on the kitchen window sill.

These amazing little creatures great us each morning, singing in our backyard and enjoying the feast we leave for them day after day. We watch them, we marvel at their beauty and we allow them to slow down our days, to remind us of the magic right outside our window.

  3. Love the photo! I wish we could feed birds but we have had a bear many years ago on our property who did some considerable damage and it was recommended to us to not have anything that would encourage bears....hence the no feeding bird rule. However I bet we could put up bird houses around the edge of the woods.....Hmmm...I think I might check into that.

    1. Thanks Karen. I am not sure what I would do if we couldn't feed them. There are a bears around here, never seen one, but we have found their scat when we hike at the conservation area. They are not too common and have never done damage though. Hope you find a solution so you can enjoy our feathered friends :)

    1. Haha, that is a great way to put it. The story line on our kitchen window sill this morning was two red squirrels bickering away, and one trying to chase the other one away. I opened the window and told them there was enough food for both of them :)

  7. We do a very similar thing! Only we are watching quail eat at the quail block. The cottontail rabbits like to join in as well. Lovely to see your family from inside for a change!
