The Giving Tree

Every year after Christmas, we drag our tree outside and lean it up somewhere in the yard. It becomes a wonderful place for birds and little creatures to find shelter from the cold winter days. This year, though, we have done something a little different. I was inspired by this post from Our One Sweet Family to not only provide shelter for our little feathered friends, but to also provide them with some food.
Reece and I added some bird seed to some crunchy peanut butter and rolled them up into balls.

I halved some oranges and put some seed in a bowl.

Then we headed outside to decorate our Giving Tree.

We had a great time decorating the tree, for the second time this season.

The birds are still loving the little treasure we found on the side of the road.

Within minutes of heading inside, watching from the kitchen door, we spotted at least a dozen birds enjoying our Giving Tree.

  1. Such a great idea! I'm having second thoughts about having cut up our Christmas tree... although in CA, the treats would have been devoured by squirrels and raccoons, most likely.

Thanks for your comment on my blog. Yours is lovely!

  2. Thanks Barefoot Mama, we had a great time decorating it. It didn't take long for the birds to devour it...time to decorate again :)

  3. Thanks for stopping by April. I was a little worried the squirrels might get in on the action, but so far we haven't seen one.

  4. Isn't this such a great way to "give back"?! We need to make some more treats for our giving tree too! :)

  5. It is an awesome way to give back, Shel and I can't thank you enough for the inspiration. Reece has been up every morning watching the birds enjoy our Giving Tree.

    Thank you.

  6. That's so wonderful! For a second I thought the birdseed peanut butter cakes were going to be some type of raw cookie!

  7. Haha KC, I thought they looked like a raw cookie when I took the picture too! If the birds are any indication they do taste pretty good :)
