Our Weekend

This weekend has left me feeling so very blessed. We started our Saturday with a trip to the market. It was a quick walk around hand in hand with my little man and his friend, picking up organic salad greens and kale, and the first asparagus of the season, as well as some delicious raw chocolate. Then it was off to a children's concert with the band Woodlandy Dandies. The concert was awesome, the kids had a wonderful time and I enjoyed catching up with friends. We headed home for time in the yard, me gardening and Reece and his friend playing in the sunshine. Our evening included dinner on the back deck by the fire, and then once the little man was tucked in, a quiet night of knitting and reading for me, while Justin watched a little TV.

I was up with the sun on Sunday, and out the door for a run, while Justin and Reece slept. They were both awake when I got back, laughing and playing. I made pancakes, while they headed outside to play. And then we enjoyed our first breakfast of the season outside. Yes, we actually ate breakfast outside. We have been enjoying lunch and dinner on the back deck here and there over the last few weeks, but the mornings have still been a little chilly, until yesterday. It was lovely. Justin lit a fire, and we sat out there enjoying the bird song and the beauty around us.

After breakfast,  I washed the woolens and put them outside to dry. This is our final farewell to winter. They are now washed, dried and put away...until the fall.

The rest of the day was spent in the garden. All the beds are now pretty much growing something.  There are still a few rows left open to do a second seeding of lettuces, kale, Swiss chard and beets this week. It was wonderful to be out there in the sunshine, my hands in the dirt planting the food that will help sustain us this summer and right through the winter. Once I finished up Reece wanted to plant a few things in his garden. We started some flowers inside a few weeks ago, and he wanted to get them in. He also requested some green beans, tomatoes and eggplant. I had one tomato plant without a home, so he adopted it and planted it in his garden. He borrowed some green bean seeds from me and we planted them together and this week we will hit the market and pick him up a few eggplant starts. He was pretty happy with his garden when we were done.

We finished up the day with dinner on the back deck, that was the third meal of the day outside, and then another quiet night, me reading and Justin watching TV.

How was your weekend?

  1. How beautiful! I can't wait to see your gardens in full bloom. We also had a picnic breakfast at the botanical gardens early Sunday. Sitting in the sun on a blanket, eating fig bars, fruit and drinking cool water. It was lovely.

Most of our planting is done as well. The only thing left are the pepper plants. Still find the nights a bit chilly so I'm going to be hardening them off a bit more this week. We weren't successful with peppers last year, so I'm being more cautious. But we put 32 heirloom tomato plants in the ground yesterday and that to me is always the official start of summer! Oh! And our first tofu-kabobs on the grill Saturday night... that was sinfully good. :-)

Wishing you a wonderful week. xox

    1. Oh that sounds lovely. We love breakfast picnics :) Kabobs on the grill, love it. We have been enjoying tempeh kabobs the last few weeks, so nice to get back into the summer meals. Have a great week! xo

  2. you are tempting mother nature with those washed woolens ;) Yesterday was the first day I had short sleeves bared on a walk!!! What a day, and it felt so nice. We haven't had breakfast outside yet but yes, there have been lunches.

    1. Haha, I sure hope not. If cold weather returns now I just might cry. Thank you, we love it out there and spend a lot time sitting around that table.

  3. oh your weekend sounds just about perfect to me, Kim! our saturdays typically start with a walk/bike ride to the market here in town and it is a big part of our world during market season. music, friends, good food, you just can't beat it! and breakfast outside is one of my favorites, but breakfast outside with a fire sounds AMAZING. will have to give that a try sometime. something about that just seems to define coziness. warm food, warm fire, a chill in the air and birdsong? yes, please!

your garden looks very lovely, too~ we really need to get on it and pick up some remay cloth/row cover to keep cabbage worms and flea beetles off of our brassicas. we keep saying we're going to and don't. maybe I'll just order it now and be done with it- thanks for the motivation via your photos.

    1. Thanks Amanda, it was pretty perfect! We do love our market mornings too, and eating breakfast outside is like the cherry on the ice cream.

Yes, on the row cloth. We use it to help prevent the bugs, but also to keep the roaming chickens from eating the greens as soon as they sprout up :) Works like a charm. Happy to motivate.

  8. Hooray! Great job on getting all your beds ready! I know what a good feeling that is. Our beds our planted, but we are still doing some tweaking for the surrounding area. I love the picture of your clothes out to dry. They remind me of prayer flags. Be well.

  9. You're reminding me that I need to wash our woolens & put them away. I've been putting it off because I haven't been quite sure until just now that winter was truly gone away for the year. Thanks for the reminder! xo
