Herbs

Well, it might not look like much has happened around the garden since last week, but there has been a lot of activity. I finished moving all the soil, getting all the raised beds and some of our perennial flower beds topped up. The trellises for our peas have been put together and been placed in the garden. The old saying one person's trash is another person's treasure definitely applies here...we saved those metal frames from the garbage. Seeds have been planted...mesclun mix, romaine, a salad mix, carrots, beets, Swiss chard and kale. Oh, it felt so good to put my hands in the earth to plant those seeds. The raspberries are doing well, the leaves look very healthy, and the blueberry bush came back. I was so sure it wouldn't make it, so I was pretty pleased to see it peeking out. And did you see that garlic! Now that makes this homesteader smile.

Yesterday we celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary with a trip to Richters to pick up our herbs for the garden. After a lovely visit there, we enjoyed lunch out and then came home and spent the rest of the afternoon in the garden, me planting, Justin collecting branches for stakes and Reece creating a little something in the mud kitchen. It was a wonderful afternoon.

To finish off our day we enjoyed dinner on the back deck, eggs with ramps, dill and chives...all from the backyard. There were pickled beets and pickles on the side, from last summer's harvest. As we enjoyed our meal I realized this is the first year we are enjoying the last summer's bounty as we begin planting this year's garden. Our pantry shelves are usually empty by now. This, as many of you fellow homesteaders will understand, made the three of us so very happy and grateful.

The plan for the week ahead includes a little more planting, picking up our tomato plants, and preparing and planting our potato bed. We are in full gardening mode around here and enjoying every minute of it.

How are things around your garden this week?

  3. Happy Anniversary Kim. your gardens are so lovely. Those metal frames were a nice save. It always shocks me what some people throw out, and then shocks me even more to see how clever people are repurposing items. Be well.

    1. Thank you for the anniversary wishes. They were an awesome save. Let's hope they work out well. They were less work then building the twig and rope teepees we used last year :)

  4. Looking great Kim! And we're still enjoying last summer's harvests too! In fact, I'm trying to convince Steve to plant a few things less since we still have so much from last year. He, of course, won't hear of it :) And happy anniversary! 19 years!!!! That's incredible!

    1. Thanks Lisa! I wouldn't hear of it either. I have been giving away a few things here and there, and I figure if we have more this year, that means sharing a little more next year too :)

Thanks you, it feels kinda surreal, can't believe it has been that long.

  10. Incredible! I love all of your herbs. We are trying to set aside a bit of our garden for herbs and I am just not having much luck with seeds other than my ever-prosperous basil so I am on the hunt for some local sources for what I'm looking for. I really wanted a good patch of lemon balm. I can't wait to see what happens in your garden as the season moves forward.

    1. Thanks Sara. I am so happy we have Richters here, such a wonderful source of organic herbs. It is such a pleasure to visit their greenhouse.

      Good luck finding a source.
