Apple Orchard Fun

Apple picking was one of those things we stopped doing a long time ago, I just couldn't pick apples covered in chemicals. Until three years ago when I found Avalon Organic Apple Orchard. The year I found it was unfortunately a bad year and they didn't open for picking. I was very disappointed but excited with the prospect we might get to pick organic apples the following year. And we did!

We picked there for the first time last year and it was wonderful. Last week we made the drive, it is about a two hour drive for us, to Avalon and picked 55lbs of apples. It was a lovely day, and we had a blast. Justin has been a little out of commission the last few weeks with some knee issues, but both Reece and I were happy when he decided to join us.

Justin drove, I knitted and Reece chatted, non stop. We were the only ones in the orchard. We picked apples. We ate apples. We picked some more and we ate some more. Then we grab a picnic table right beside the orchard and enjoyed our packed lunch. And then we picked some more.

Wondering what we are going to do with all of those apples. We have made a delicious apple cake, fruit leathers and have juiced some. Next up is more fruit leathers and some apple sauce. Whatever is left after that we will eat.

  2. Have you ever made Apple Butter? It's not actually butter, but an apple spread. Quite yummy.

  8. Oooo, fruit leather, I forgot about that. Our dehydrator is currently on making some apple chips. We have made it through about 25 of the 60 lbs picked.

Looks like you had a blast. I will have to check where Avalon is, maybe next year we should pick together!

We made more fruit leather today, currently dehydrating as I type. Thinking some apple chips should go in there tomorrow, yum!
