Around the Garden

Let's take a little tour of the garden, shall we? As you step off the front porch, the front garden gate is right there, ready to welcome you. In this space you will find tomatoes, bush beans, pole beans, beets, Swiss chard, kale, salad greens, butternut squash, summer squash, pumpkins, calendula, sweet William, zinnias, and sunflowers growing towards the sun. Things are just beginning to sprout, but it won't be long before it looks full and lush.

Then as you cross the driveway, just in front of the chicken coop you will find the berries and asparagus. I have raspberries and blueberries growing. Sadly, two of the four blueberry bushes I planted last year didn't make it. I will replace them next year, and hopefully add three more. I also lost two raspberry bushes, but there are plenty to take their place so that loss isn't as bad.

Then we walk around to the back garden. Here we have garlic, strawberries, snow peas, snap peas, carrots, cucumber, bush beans, and a wide variety of herbs, both culinary and medicinal. The snow and snap peas are growing up, and I look forward to seeing the wall they create. The carrots have sprouted, I always worry about those little carrot seeds, and the cucumbers came up in a matter of days, which I am sure had to do with the summer like weather we had in the days after I planted the seeds.

And in Reece's play area, his little garden grows. He has strawberries, and decided this year he really wanted flowers. So we planted a cosmos that we picked up at the market, some zinnias, and an annual flower mix, which is just starting to sprout. And those flowers right up there...blackberries!

The garden has been a joy to work on, as it always is. I love my time out there, and can't wait to watch it grow this summer.

How are things around your garden?

  1. Your garden looks like it is similar to mine, ahead in some ways and about the same in others ;). I was thinking I should do a few garden posts this year as I seem to have something to share! Most of my seeds have sprouted which is always the exciting bit isn't it, now just need to keep the pests at bay! I grow more root veg than you, or maybe you haven't planted any yet?

    1. Oh yes, most definitely, I would love a little peek around your garden throughout the summer :) This year I only have beets and carrots. Usually there are potatoes, but not this year, hopefully again next year.

      Happy gardening my friend. xo

    2. Hi Kim,
So much going on in your garden, you and Reece are doing an amazing job.
We've had so much rain here, things are very slow in growing...
Take care, many hugs to you both.

  3. Your garden is looking great! Mine is coming along pretty well, even though these past two days have been pretty cold, around 13C in the day and 8C at night (I'm in southern Quebec). I'm especially worried about my tomato plants with all the rain we've had, I had problems with late blight last year and I'm desperately trying to avoid it this year.
You sure have a lot of garlic! Do you manage to harvest enough to last until next year? This is my first year growing garlic so I only planted a few (about 15 plants or so).
Have a great weekend Kim! xo

    1. Thanks Marcela. We had that cold spell too, it wasn't fun. I hope the blight holds off.

I do! We love garlic. Finally this year I will make it harvest to harvest, for the first time. Pretty exciting. I also managed to use my garlic for planting last fall.

      Thanks, you too!

  5. It's a beautiful garden Kim.
My garden is hanging on, but with two tropical storms and the heat that has arrived it's not as pretty as it once was in the beginning. We put up shade cloth last night and I'm hoping that will help. Oh, and I did get to eat the first ripe tomato so there is that!!! :)

    1. Thanks Tracey. The first ripe tomato, that is amazing. I bet it tasted delicious. Sorry the storms and heat are wrecking havoc on your garden. I guess the good news is the garden doesn't have to look pretty to produce food :)

  6. How do your blackberries not completely take over?! The garden looks great, and like it should be a good year. Can't wait to see all of that work pay off! It should be beautiful.

    1. Thanks my friend.

This is only the second year for the blackberry bush, so not taking over yet, but I am sure they will, and I am okay with that :) I have actually planted it in it's own raised bed, so it can't really go anywhere, but I do hope it will fill out the bed over the next few years.

  8. I like to watch your garden grow as well.

I know what you mean about the carrot seeds - they seem so small and they seem to take a few days longer to germinate than you'd expect...haha, the funny things gardeners worry over eh?

    1. Thanks Matt.

I know. I honestly worry about those carrot seeds every year and every year they sprout. I should just stop worrying :)

Hope your garden is growing well.

  9. Everything is looking great... we are haaving mixed success : Everything that loves the cold is thriving... everything else we've lost or is stunted and very unhappy. They keep promising that the weather will warm up... we are still waiting for them to make good on their promise! :-P

    1. Thanks Yanic. So sorry about your losses, it has been a very unpredictable spring for sure. We have been chilly the last week, but they are saying we will warm up again this week, I hope they are right, I am missing the warmth. Hopefully some sun and heat will find you guys soon.

  10. It's all looking wonderful and so full of promise. My patch is doing pretty well generally, though it doesn't look overly pretty. I might actually do a post on it soon - purely for selfish reasons really! I'd love to be able to document its progress and also be able to compare year on year. Do you grow your zinnias and sweet williams purely as beautiful flowers or do they have a herbal/edible element to them too?

    1. Thank you Sally! I would love to see your garden, post soon, okay?

Zinnias and sweet Williams are because I love flowers :)
