Shifting

Oh September, how I adore you. You bring darker mornings, and earlier sunsets. You start the day with a chill in the air, allowing the sun to slowly warm the earth. You bring forth a sense of renewal, and transition. You remind us to connect to what is most important to us. You call on us to realign ourselves with our dreams and goals. You are a quiet pull, gently tugging us inward.

I have been sinking into September, in the way I usually do, by shifting things in our home here and there, creating a cozy and comfortable space for my little man and I. The curtains that are pulled back all summer long to let in the summer sunshine, are released. The blankets and quilts are being pulled out, draped across the sofa, and used on a regular basis. The hand knit shawls are finding their way to my shoulders more often. More candles are out, and being lit in the early morning and again as the sun goes down. A cup of tea is always close by, and the kitchen has come alive with soup, chili and curry. In essence, I am beginning the move into hibernation.

I feel it every year as the weather shifts, the pull to tuck myself away, body, mind and soul. To reconnect to me. To find more moments of stillness and quiet. To turn inward, deeply. To create more time and space for reflection. I relish this time, and love the gentle nudge to retreat. This rhythm of mine, connected to the shift that happens in September, brings me solace, and always serves as a reminder that we are deeply connected to Mother Earth, and her rhythms.

How is September treating you so far, my friends? Are you retreating, feeling the shift of September and the transition it brings?

    1. If there is one thing I love about autumn it is the cozy feeling that infiltrates my life....from my home, to sweaters, scarves, fingerless mitts, quilts and shawls, to warm drinks in front of the fire....I love it all. Bring it on!!!

  2. Fall is my favorite season. I love the quiet, soft feel of the air, the cooler temps and yes, the woodfires again. I cooked chicken soup on our wood cookstove yesterday- with broth simmered (from our chickens) for about 30 hours and filled it with garlic, leeks, kale, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and basil, rosemary, thyme, chives from our garden. It was a wonderful start to the season. I am wrapping up the summer garden and planting the greenhouse for the fall/winter garden this week. After that I want to slow down and just soak in the peace that this season brings- focusing more on homeschooling and just spending time with my munchkins outside on picnics and trips to the apple barn etc... Summer is so intense here on our homestead that fall is a much welcomed break!

  4. I just this very morning noticed that small hint of changing seasons. Slightly cool and mist on the windshield. I love September! Reading this makes me want to light candles and have a cup of tea tonight!

  5. september is the best this year, ordinarily I don't like it because it's still too hot but this year, so far, it's been glorious! So September is treating me mighty fine.

    1. It is much cooler than normal for us too. Normally I would be sad about that but for some reason this year it feels right, so I am rolling with it. Glad September is treating you well Karen.

  6. Oh I love the way you have expressed the change in rhythms. The way you embrace it. We are moving into Spring here, yet the weather has been all winter. And then there's the contrast of the blossom and winter blooms. It's felt unusual. Inside I am ready for the change of seasons, but outside feels like there's a tug to move slower and linger softly with winter for a while longer. I hope all is wonderful in your world Kim xx

    1. Thank you, sweet friend. Things are well in my world, always shifting, and changing, but I am learning better to roll with it, and to expect the unexpected. Hope all is well with you too. xo
