Our Days

I often get asked what a day in the life of our family looks like and so today I thought I would share our day yesterday. Although each and every day is different, there are some things that remain the same as we move through our week regardless of the day.

The alarm goes off at 5:30am, I usually hit snooze and get out of bed around 6am. And by get out of bed, I mean sneak, ever so quietly out of bed so I don't wake Reece. This is my morning time. I boil up some water for a cup of hot water and lemon and then settle in to check email, link up blog posts and maybe check out a few blogs. Then I am off to get myself dressed before Reece wakes up.

Once Reece is up we work together to make juice or smoothies, and then get started on breakfast. At some point Justin wakes up, gets dressed and heads out to check on the chickens and do whatever needs to be done out there. The three of us then sit down to breakfast, usually around 8am.

After breakfast we tidy up the kitchen, Reece gets dressed, we make beds and tidy up anything else that needs to be tidied up. Reece and I then get started on our morning circle time and Justin heads out to his workshop to start work.

Reece and I went on a little nature adventure at Lynde Shore Conservation Area after our morning circle yesterday. We fed the birds, tried to identify as many birds as we could, tracked bunnies and searched for other signs of our forest friends.

We headed home happy and ready for lunch. While I prepared lunch Reece played and shared our morning with Justin. We sat down together to eat and then tidied up the kitchen. Justin went back out to his workshop while Reece and I got to work dying some eggs for Easter. While the eggs were boiling and then sitting to cool we read some stories, played with cars, did a puzzle and had a little snuggle.

Justin comes in everyday from his workshop at 3pm and spends some time with Reece while I do a little bit of work. This might include answering client emails, working on protocols, maybe a little marketing and if there is time, some blog reading. And some days I forget the work and hit the trails for an afternoon run.

This usually takes me up to dinner preparation time. I hit the kitchen and get dinner ready. We usually sit down around 5:30pm for dinner. After dinner we tidy up the kitchen and with the extended daylight we have started our after dinner walks again. Once home, Justin gets the bath ready for Reece and the two of them head in for some water play and fun. I get a bedtime snack ready, make a cup of tea, get the beds turned down and might get a few rows of knitting in.

Reece enjoys his snack and then we are off to bed for a bedtime story or two and then off to dreamland, which might take 5 to 45 minutes.

By the time Reece is asleep Justin has settled in to watch something on TV. I hit the shower and then sit down to write my post for the next day and catch up on some blogs. Then a little knitting or reading before heading to bed myself around 11pm.

Our days are pretty simple. Mornings are often activities which might include a nature adventure, skating, a play date or swimming. Afternoons might include a combination of baking, crafting, playing, inside and out, walking the dog and reading. Morning and evening rhythms book end our days and our meal time rhythms bring us together as a family throughout the day to check in with each other.

We do have a regular day for grocery shopping and usually take some time on Friday afternoon for a full clean up around the house. I sometimes have to book in appointments with clients during the week and will do this in the morning and Reece will hang with Justin.

Soon our days will include much more time in the garden as we build some new raised beds, do some garden clean up, get planting, get ready for the arrival of our bees and just enjoy the sunshine we have missed so much over the winter.

Simple days filled with the things we like to do, things that fill our hearts and souls and things that make us happy. What more could we ask for?

What do your days look like?

  2. He is also a bird whisperer? No wonder you both enjoy nature so much- what a beautiful image of Reese. Beautiful rustic colors on the Easter eggs too.

  4. Nice to hear about your days. Ours sounded much the same when the kids were younger. Now they spend a bit more time on independent project and specific "lessons." Still get outside as much as possible!
Love how much time the three of your get to spend together! Something to be cherished for sure!

  9. this sounds lovely. i guess our rhythm is quite similar although i do get up later. also the baby demands attention and she takes two naps a day, so finding a rhythm is quite a juggle at times, trying to meet everyone's needs and cares. i am hoping for A LOT more outside time in the coming months. our winter has simply been too long - and no end in sight...

    1. The outside time is going to be amazing, we are so looking forward it too. I found it hard to find a rhythm when Reece was a baby, but now it seems to fall into place pretty easily.

    1. Busy and full, but so enjoyed. We live in a small home with a tiny kitchen, if we don't keep it tidy we won't be able to prepare meals :)

  12. I read this right when it was posted and only now am commenting, better late than never. I love getting a peek at someone's daily rituals. You seem to have a lovely rhythm in your home and yet it's flexible enough for when life throws a curve ball :)

  13. I tried to reply last night, but I don't think I published it...anyways. I loved to read about your rhythm and to let you know I think it's so wonderful that your husband is able to be so present during your day. I've always tried to get up earlier than the rest of our house, but whenever I do...I always snuggle back down under the covers. I've never been a morning person and even after having kids, I still have a hard time sparking in the morning. But I've always wanted to, because I think I would be so much more productive. It's on my bucket list...wake up before my family and enjoy a moment or two to myself. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a good weekend.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post. We are very lucky that Justin can be so present in our days, although the circumstances that allow it made life tough for many many years. But now we are grateful for what it brings to our lives. Funny how those things work out sometimes.

I have always been a morning person. Having Reece changed that a bit for a while. Reece was a big morning nurser and loved to just lay in bed in the mornings nursing and cuddling. So for a few years I lost my mornings, but I am now slowly regaining them. There are still mornings when I try to sneak out and he wakes up calling me back. It makes the days when I do sneak out successfully that much sweeter.

Here's hoping you can cross getting up early off your bucket list :)

    1. Thanks. It has taken us some time for finally find what works for us, actually it took letting go of controlling it and instead just letting it happen. Once we did that it all fell into place.

More about the life we have built, I can do that. Let me think about the best way to go about and then I will share.

  15. Thank you for sharing a bit of your daily rhythm, Kim! I always love having a peak into someone else's day and get inspired by it. Your rhythm sounds just like I want ours to be..:) I hope my partner will be able to be more involved soon again too. I think it's wonderful if we get a bit of everything: family time, work, one-on-one with children and partner,...love it! Wishing you a beautiful weekend with many blissful moments like these! ~ Love, Halina

    1. It is pretty amazing and it never gets old. We visit this spot at least two times a month. Every time a bird lands in our hand we get a little excited. We have also feed chipmunks and squirrels, and had blue jays and woodpeckers land on our hands at this lovely little spot
