Sometimes you just get in a groove, a good groove. Lately there has been a whole lot of craftiness going on in our home and we love it. We delved into soap making this week using this book. While many traditionalists out there may not call the method we used soap making that is okay with us. We choose to avoid the use of lye for a number of reasons; the number one being it would allow Reece to take part in the fun.
Reece has this thing with soap, not sure why, but he really likes it. He has a little bag of natural soap from the health food store he carries around with him all the time. And whenever we visit the health food store he heads straight to the soap so he can add one or two to his collection. So with plans to make our own we knew we had to find a way to include him and the melt and pour method of soap making allowed that. The soap turned out great and we have been using it all week. Love it!
I experimented this week with fabric buttons from Sunbeam Button Supplies and they turned out great! I added them to hair clips and they look awesome. Definitely a great Christmas present for my nieces...now to order more supplies.
There has been time for some sewing this week too, or at least getting a pattern, choosing fabric and getting it cut out. Should be on the machine in the next day or two and my little man should be wearing a new pair of pants soon.
And of course there is always time for knitting. You can check out my Yarn Along post from yesterday to check out the progress on my needles.
What are you creating these days?

Love the little button barrettes. They are so adorable! What is the name/maker of the paisley fabric? I'm such a sucker for paisley :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, I think so too! I wish I could help with the name, I just picked it out of a bin at the fabric shop, there was just under a yard left. It was a lucky find :)
DeleteYour soap making idea is a good idea for people with little ones Kim. I am planning on making soap myself this weekend. I am also planning on making some new recipes. xxoo
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie, enjoy your weekend of soap making. We will be making more this weekend too!
DeleteThose crafty grooves are so great. I really want to try some soap. I'm thinking the recipe without Lye is a good place to start.
ReplyDeleteThey are just awesome, I love it when it happens. And yes it is the perfect place to start, especially if little ones are involved. Have fun!
DeleteI love the little button barrettes, they are just too cute! I need to look into make a few here for the wee one!
ReplyDeleteI am working on cedar buttons, this is not the quick project I envisioned, but they are going to be cute when I'm finally done!
Cedar buttons Tracey, how lovely!!! My husband mentioned making a few wooden buttons for me the other day for my shawl, might take him up on it. Can't wait to see how yours turn out.
Deletei love that someone has a crafty groove... I'm waiting for mine to kick in again. :) I love that Reece has a soap thing. When I was young (before soup was kept in liquid dispensers), when ever we went to a restaurant, I always headed straight for the bathroom to, "check out the soap". I loved to see if they had square, flat rectangles (like at hotels), sea shell shaped, and so on. I think Reece and I would be soap buds!
ReplyDelete:)
Oh for sure, he would love that!!!! The star shaped soap was just for him, he saw a picture of it in the book and had to make it. Every morning he gets up asking for his soap :)
DeleteAnd no worries, I am sure the crafty groove will be back soon.
Your soap looks great, and I love that your lad got to help! How cute that he has a soap addiction ;-) We have had soap on our to-do list for ages, we need to get a move on!
ReplyDeleteOh you should, it was super easy and a lot of fun! We will be making more tomorrow :) Enjoy!
DeleteWe tried soap once upon a time but found that soap making really wasn't our cup of tea. I love how yours turned out though, and makes me want to try again.
ReplyDeleteThe buttons are gorgeous as well. Do you think a 6yo would be able to make some? My daughter is all about horses, and we have some horse fabric that would look cute on a hair clip.
Stopped by from OLM
You should definitely try again, you just never know, maybe this time you will like it :)
DeleteHmmm...I think so. The hardest part is snapping the button together, but will a little adult help I don't see why not. You do need to use some pliers and copper wire too, to attach the button to the clip.
your soap looks great. i have toyed with making soap for awhile, it seems hard. lol
ReplyDeleteThanks. Go for it! It was really easy and a ton of fun.
DeleteI abandoned the notion of soap making a while back but after seeing yours I really might just have to take it up again! Thanks for the inspiration. :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely try again, it was a lot of fun and really easy. Always happy to inspire :)
